On blogging

There are so many different blogs around the world, it seems like whatever silly thing you can think up can be turned into a very successful blog. Many poeple, that personally know me, can testify that I love to read regularly updated blogs of my friends with all the tips on cooking and child-rearing and marriage. I love consistency which many of my friends that have jobs and families cannot provide – I mean, who can find time to update a blog on a daily basis with “something blog world worthy”? That’s why I also read a few professional blogger sites. At first it seemed silly that people can get paid to write about their lives full-time and get paid for it, but as long as it entrenrtaining or it contains cute cats with funny captions – it will be included in my google reader.

On one of those days when none of my friends have been diligent enough to update their blogs with new stuff to read, I have wondered upon a hot new blog – the Pioneer Woman. I am sure many of you ( if there is anyone reading this) have heard of this blog. It’s full of funny stories, embarrassing confessions and delicious recipes (with mouthwatering pictures – another of my weaknesses). I swear the Pionneer Women is related to Paula Deen, but that’s beyond the topic of this post.

So there are many sections on the PW blog, one of my favorite ones is the Photography section. Every few days blog contributors add articles with useful photography tips, photoshop techniques and simply beautiful pictures. I have always been a devoted reader and giveaway contender (fyi I never win anything – it there a trick to it? :) ). Anyways, recently there have been assignments posted for the tips that have been discussed. Usually I am not the one to participate in those kind of things …Maybe, it’s because it involves posting your work, and not just for your facebook friends to see ( and the friends of their friends) that will always try to find encouraging words and “thumbs up”. No, when you submit your work on flikr or something like unto that, you open yourself up to the whole wide world (aka “www” :) ) to pick your photos appart as if they were your art professor in college. And I really don’t believe when people say “Don’t take it personally, but your work SUCKS/not creative enough/boring/traditional.” I’ve heard this saying so many times while studying art, but I still don’t buy it. Maybe people think that their harsh critique will be accepted better or it will make them feel better…

Well, from where I see it, the art in whichever form you present it to the world is an extension of who you are (or who I am in this case). And no matter how many times people say “it’s not personal” – it is, at least for me. But through the years I have gotten a thicker skin or something, and now I see each “not so good” and “could have been better” piece of art is a step towards what I can become.

So these are the two portraits of Chris and Marianne taken at Oakland Mountain View Cemetery I have submitted for a “Textured photo assigment”, and I feel liberated !
